Displaying Full Original Headers for Problem Email Investigation

Full original headers provide information about the path the message took to get to you. They are critical for ITS staff members investigating the origins of an email message. Simple headers (to/from) can be forged, so without the full headers, almost nothing can be done to investigate a problematic email.

Use the instructions below to display full original headers. Once you have done this, copy and paste the entire message, including all the headers, into a new message, and send it to abuse@umich.edu.

Here's how to include full original headers using the following email programs:

Expand All Content

U-M Google Mail or Gmail
  1. Open the message.
  2. Click the down triangle for More next to the Reply arrow at the top of the message.
  3. Select show original.
Mail.app (Mac)
  1. Open the message.
  2. Under the View menu, select Message, then Long Header.
Outlook 2016 Windows
  1. Double-click the message to open it in its own window.
  2. On the File tab, select Properties.
  3. Header information displays in the Internet headers box.

Or, in the Reading Pane:

  1. Click the More down arrow on the Reply or Reply All button.
  2. Select View message details.
Outlook 2016 Mac
  1. Right-click (or Ctrl+click) the message in your Inbox or other folder (do not open the message).
  2. Select View Source.
  3. Header information displays in a new TextEdit document.
Outlook Web App (OWA) or Outlook on the Web 2016
  1. Double-click the message to open it.
  2. Click the More down arrow next to the Reply or Reply All button.
  3. Select View Message Details.

Or, in the Reading Pane:

  1. Click the More down arrow next to the Reply or Reply All button.
  2. Select View message details.
